food in nz
Overall the food in New Zealand was very good and I was mostly impressed. They don't seem to cut corners and even lower priced places produce quality food! Bravo, NZ.
The food reminded me of California but with small twists here and there. They were spot on with their gluten free options which made me glad.
I'm going to go through some of my favorite things we ate....
1. Absolute favorite thing was the Rhubarb Toasted Cardamom Creme Brulee that I unfortunately ate too fast to take a picture of, oops.
We had it at the end of our meal at Cafe Hanoi in Aukland.
There was perfectly sweetened and cooked rhubarb on the bottom topped with the creme brulee base with just a hint of toasted cardamom. And the toasted sugar topping was perfection. I didn't stop talking about it the entire trip.
2. Little and Friday is a hip breakfast spot we were recommended in Aukland and we loved it. Not cheap but worth the price. Great teas and coffee and pastries up the wazoo along with savory items that we settled on. Below you can see the tea set up they gave me - steeping glass to the left, then my cup, raw sugar and a little container of cream! Adorbs.
3. Another breakfast spot in Aukland was called Bird on a Wire and was in a little hipster mall that reminded me of the San Francisco Ferry Building. The little cake at the bottom of my plate was a fried patty of quinoa and other delicious ingredients I wish I could remember.
4. Our first night on the south island was spent at a hostel in Lake Tekapo. On our way in we passed a river with wild salmon (there were signs) so we found a place that sold it and cooked it up that night. The salmon blew our minds - real fatty and tasted like butter. In fact, it was sort of like eating a room temperature stick of butter. What could be better than that? Nothing is the answer. Nothing. Not sure how we pulled it off with the lack of cooking gear they had but we did it!
5. The burgers we stumbled upon in Tarras on our way to Wanaka wins best burger/lunch of our trip. It was AMAZING. Had coleslaw and the most decadent caramelized onions (seriously they were candied or something) along with sweet barbeque sauce and aioli. We got it at an adorable little cafe on the main highway called Tarras Country Cafe. We proceeded to skydive within an hour of eating these. I don't suggest doing that.
4. This polenta goat cheese patty we got at the Stables restaurant in Arrowtown, NZ was delicious. Not pictured - kumara (NZ sweet potatoe) fries...something about the kumara varietal makes them perfect for frying and I wanted them with every meal.
5. Monteith's apple cider was the bees knees. We were told by a friend to make sure and drink it while we were there and she was right. It's just enough sweet with a crisp finish. Yum.
6. Patagonia ice cream! I could eat that Banana Split ice cream every single day.
7. Fergburger in Queenstown is a fun, packed spot that seems sorta famous. It was good but didn't beat out my favorite burger in Tarras.

my veggie frittata (good but I wanted more of the cream on top)
James's toast with roasted tomatoes, bacon and poached egg - he won this meal
One of their decadent pastries we got to go for the drive - a glorified jelly donut with raspberry and custard
